Meet Mark Costin, a passionate adventurer and endurance sports enthusiast based in Townsville, North Queensland.

With a deep love for nature and an annoyingly contagious zest for life, Mark seizes every opportunity he can to spend time in the great outdoors. Whether he’s hiking or trail running through the bush, covering challenging terrain on his mountain bike, paddling his kayak or whitewater boat or taking his trusty road bike out for an early morning spin, Mark finds immense joy in all of it.

Perhaps Mark’s greatest passion of all is for adventure racing – A sport in which he gets to combine all his hobbies (“why focus on just one sport when you can be average at four”) and truly test his physical and mental limits. After winning the Adventure Racing World Series Australasian Championship in November 2022, Mark recently returned from the 2023 World Championships in South Africa where he competed with his team CHIPESTI (an acronym for ‘Epic Sh*t’ and something the team experienced all too well when they were struck down with gastro on the 7th day after sitting in 11th and covering over 720 kilometres on minimal food and sleep). Despite missing out on their fairytale ending, the race highlighted Mark’s never give up attitude and his ability to sit in extreme discomfort (something that will no doubt come in handy on the hill climbs). Not content kicking goals at ground level, the human incarnation of the Energizer Bunny is also learning to fly and is working towards his pilot’s license.

Professionally, Mark works as a technician for a mining company. Despite the busy and demanding nature of his job, Mark always finds time to help others, hoping to make the world a little bit better each day. It is this unwavering commitment, sweetened by his love of cycling, that has led Mark to join this year’s charity ride. Mark hopes to channel all of his skills and passion into raising awareness and much needed funds for ovarian cancer research, while inspiring others to do their bit to create positive change.
