  • My name is Claire Reaburn, a mother of two daughters and grandmother (Omie) to twins – a boy and a girl.

I have a rare form of Ovarian Cancer known as Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumour (JGCT). There is no specific treatment for JGCT. This lack of treatment options is due to the small number of females with JGCT and the fact that research into this cancer is virtually non-existent. We aim to RAISE MONEY TO FUND NEW RESEARCH.

My husband Peter and myself are very fortunate to be members of the Miami Masters Swimming Club on the Gold Coast. Each year our club holds a fundraising Swimathon for charity. This year Miami Masters is again raising funds for Rare Ovarian Cancer Inc (ROCInc), the organisation set up by the mother of a 16-year-old girl diagnosed with JGCT, to raise funds for lifesaving research into JGCT.

This year’s Miami Masters Swim for Claire Challenge will be held at the Miami Aquatic Centre at Pizzey Park, Miami on Saturday the 18th of October from 2pm to 4pm and followed by a free BBQ. Rackley Swimming have very kindly given Miami Masters Swimming Club the use of 10 lanes of the pool at no cost.

We are encouraging what we call “CHALLENGES”. Females of all ages who get hit with rare ovarian cancer are challenged for the rest of their lives. We want swimmers of all ages, fitness levels, and abilities to “CHALLENGE” themselves.

The CHALLENGES on Saturday 18th of October are based on one hour of swimming and might include:

    1.     Relay (any number of participants) swim in 50m or 100m swims for an hour.

    2.     Endurance 1000 Swims for 30, 45 or 60 minutes. If you are a masters swimming club member you can use this as part of your Endurance 1000 program. We’ll time the swim for you.

    3.     50m swims for an hour with lanes allocated for time bases of 50, 60, 75 or 90 seconds. Peter has a crew that do 60 x 50 on 60. At gentleman’s pace!

    4.     YOUR OWN CHALLENGE if you have one. These might include:

    a.     50 x 100m on 1.30, 1.40, 1.50, 2.00

    b.    3, 4 or 5k straight swim

    c.     50 or 100m non-stop for someone with a disability

    d.    Your own CHALLENGE - please let us know.

The event is a great opportunity to catch up with mates from the past and present, to share the love of swimming for health and fitness, to raise funds for a great cause, enjoy a free BBQ, and share the fun, fitness and friendship that comes when swimming together.

Swimmers can use fins, pull buoys, or paddles to complete their CHALLENGE.

FREE BBQ, fruit and healthy snacks available during and after the event.

Over the last three years, the Miami Masters Swim for Claire Challenge has raised over $30,000 for ROCInc-funded research. These funds were channelled straight to the Hudson Institute of Medical Research at Monash University in Melbourne.
