Profile – Steph Hibburt

Women’s Health, Research, and Cycling are all a passion of mine. As an aspiring rural doctor, I have completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Human Physiology and Neuroscience at the University of Melbourne. In my recent studies I have learnt how valuable research is for conditions such as cancers. Research provides us with an understanding of particular health conditions and is a fundamental part of medical science. Doctors use research and findings to treat patients and provide the best care possible.

One of the things that stood out to me about this cause, was that it is so relatable. I can put myself in the shoes of the young girls who are experiencing this rare disease. As a 23 year old, I want to take action to support them in whatever way I can. I believe that there are many others in Australian who can relate to this cause too. There are thousands of women in Australia who experience ovarian cancer every year and not to mention, 50% of the population are females too.

In terms of my cycling background. I was handed my dad’s old yellow giant road bike when I was 18 years old. I was a keen runner and swimmer at the time, so I started to compete in triathlons. I live near the coast, in South West Victoria (Port Campbell), so there are some absolutely stunning places to ride. After competing in triathlon for a number of years I started to take up cycling a little more. I did a few criterium races and the odd road race, doing quite well in women’s racing. It hasn’t been till recent months where I have started to focus all my time to cycling, with my first attempt at Road Nationals will be January 2022.
