Hannah Armstrong – Profile

My name’s Hannah, I’m currently a 3rd year medical student based rurally in Cobram, Victoria.

Throughout my studies I have learnt a lot about cancer, the way it affects individuals as well as their families. There is still so much we don’t understand about cancer, and much more we need to learn about it. Ovarian Cancer is no exception to this.

Currently there is no way to screen for Ovarian Cancer and there are no specific cures. The best way to improve the outcomes for women with this cancer is to do more research! This is one of the reasons I signed up to do this crazy ride from Canberra to Melbourne. It can be easy to feel helpless in the land of cancer, so this is a tangible thing I can do to help the cause. The funds we raise by participating in this ride will lead to research that can improve the outcomes for women with rare forms of Ovarian Cancer.

My sporting background is many and varied. Growing up I participated in sports ranging from cross country running, to ballet. Whilst at university I have played AFL-W for Melbourne University, competing in the University Nationals Team. Over the past 3 years I have also been a member of St Kilda Life Saving Club’s Surf Boat Rowing team, representing Victoria twice. A few years ago, my friend Steph (who is also riding) convinced me to start cyclocross racing and since then I’ve been hooked. I am new to the land of road cycling and feel nervous thinking about tackling 900kms in 9 days. However, I’m hopeful that the motivation to raise funds that will help women with Ovarian Cancer will get us over the line.
